BRAINTREE, MASS., (June 4, 2019) – College expenses have a way of dampening some of the excitement of being accepted, but Liberty Bay Credit Union is easing the burden by giving away $11,500 in scholarship money to area students who plan on furthering their education. Liberty Bay celebrated the winners with a dinner on May 31, at Siros Restaurant in Marina Bay, Quincy, MA.

Liberty Bay’s President Lyndon Matteson said, “We are honored to provide these scholarships to such incredibly talented young people and to be a part of the bright future that lies ahead for them. Liberty Bay is all about giving back to the community, and there is no better way to invest in the future of our communities than to help invest in the future of their young adults.”

Liberty Bay’s general scholarships are in the names of current and former Directors of the Board. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 and is available to students who have been accepted to or are enrolled in an accredited two or four year college, university, technical or vocational school. The recipients are chosen at random at the Annual Meeting of Members in April.

The Jane B. Cella Community Service Scholarship is awarded to one student who has shown dutiful service and made significant contributions to their community. The scholarship pays tribute to Cella in honor of her 46-year career at Liberty Bay. This $1,500 scholarship requires the applicant to describe in 100-300 words how they have made a difference by volunteering in their community over the past year and can be used towards the purchase of books and supplies during the academic year.

The recipient of this years Cella Community Service Scholarship was Jack Holland of Plymouth for his exemplary dedication to his community through his passion for music. Holland has organized a benefit concert with all proceeds benefitting My Brothers Keeper, a local charity that distributes gifts to underprivileged children, as well as playing at area nursing homes and for the homeless at the Salvation Army.

Liberty Bay received 80 applications for the Directors Scholarships and 15 applicants for the Jane B. Cella Community Service Scholarship. A full list of winners can be found at www.libertybay.org.
